Getting Started

What is WhenIWasHere.org?

WhenIWasHere.org is a private, secure platform where you can write messages, add pictures and videos, and have them delivered exactly when they matter most. You choose a specific date or a personal milestone, and we make sure your words arrive right on time.

How do I create a message?

Simply write your message, add up to 10 recipients, and attach any photos or videos you'd like (up to 500MB total per message). Then choose your delivery date or milestone. When you feel confident about the message, schedule it. We take care of the rest!

Scheduling & Delivery

What's the difference between a date and a milestone?

Date:

A specific day in the future (e.g., Jan 5, 2036)

Milestone:

An important life event (e.g., "When my child gets married") that doesn't have a set date yet. You can update milestone dates anytime, so the message is delivered at the perfect moment.

What happens if a milestone never happens or isn't updated?

If a milestone date is never set, the message will not be delivered. This ensures your message is only sent when it's truly relevant.

How far can I schedule my messages?

You can schedule your messages for up to 50 years in advance.

How are messages delivered?

Recipients get an email notification with a secure link to view your message. They have one year from delivery to open and download it.

Message Management

Can I change a message after it's scheduled?

Once a message is scheduled, the text and attachments cannot be changed to protect the integrity of what you intended to say. However, you can:

  • Update milestone dates
  • Change recipient email addresses

Can I send a message to myself?

Absolutely! Many people use WhenIWasHere.org to send messages to their future selves as a way to reflect, encourage, or remember important moments.

Privacy & Security

Who can see my messages?

Only the recipients you've chosen will ever see your message. Even your authorized person cannot read the content or view attachments.

How do you protect my privacy?

We use encryption and secure storage to ensure your messages remain private. No one can read your messages without your permission.

What if I change my email or my recipient changes theirs?

You can update contact email addresses via your account settings under the 'Account' tab. There is also an 'Enhanced Security' option that we recommend to ensure only YOU have access to the account. You also have the ability to update the contact information of your recipients under the 'Contacts' tab, and it will apply to all future scheduled messages for that contact.

Authorized Persons

What's an authorized person?

An authorized person is someone you trust to help manage your account if you can't. They can:

  • Update milestone dates
  • Edit recipient contact info
  • See message subjects only (never the private content)

You can add as many authorized persons as you'd like.
